Butte College and Sacramento State Sign MOA at Juneteenth Symposium

Butte College and Sacramento State have officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement to enhance academic opportunities and access for students. This agreement signifies a collaborative effort to support high-achieving students through the Black Honors College (BHC) at Sacramento State. It is part of a broader initiative by Sacramento State to create seamless pathways for students to transfer into its new Black Honors College. During a June 13 ceremony at the CSU’s Juneteenth Symposium, representatives from 16 community colleges, including Dr. Robert Withrow-Clark, dean of students of Butte College, signed MOAs to signal their partnership with the university and the BHC.

The agreement establishes a pathway for Butte College students to gain admission to Sacramento State’s BHC. Beginning January 1, 2025, and continuing through December 31, 2030, students who meet the criteria—including a minimum GPA of 3.8, eligibility for admission to Sacramento State, and a demonstrated commitment to learning about Black culture—will be guaranteed admission to the BHC. Students with GPAs between 3.5 and 3.79 will receive priority admission.

The BHC is designed for students from all backgrounds who are interested in Black history and culture. The California Assembly recently recognized Sacramento State as the state’s first Black-Serving Institution. The CSU designated it as the headquarters for its Statewide Central Office for the Advancement of Black Excellence.

The BHC will welcome its first cohort of transfer students in the Spring 2025 semester, with applications opening on August 1.

The partnership between Butte College and Sacramento State aims to enhance the academic, co-curricular, mental health, and career development of students. It also seeks to increase success and completion rates for students interested in Black studies, strengthening the ties between Butte College and the Black Honors College at Sacramento State.

Dr. J. Luke Wood, president of Sacramento State, and Virginia L. Guleff, president of Butte College, both expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the benefits of joint programming and the opportunities it will create for students.

This MOA marks another step forward in providing robust academic and transfer pathways for Butte College students.
